With Joe Kinnear openly admitting Xisco is on his way, Viduka a shapeless lump on the treatment table, Smith out of favour, fitness and form as well as Martins able to leave the club at a drop of a hat, another striker is a big need for the club.

The latest is that we`re competing with Blackburn to sign Portuguese striker Ariza Makukula from Benfica. Benfica are keen to offload the 27-year-old this month. The Portuguese side – who are second in their league – paid £3m for the player a year ago and are keen to recoup that amount.

As usual Makukula`s agent Kenneth Azquez has his say:

‘There has been interest in the player, but that all has to be negotiated with Benfica.’

Likely to be a go-er? Probably not now Tony Jiminez`s ‘legendary` continental scouting experience is gone.
