Despite Joe Kinnear’s insistence that Joey Barton is going anywhere, cash rich Portsmouth have declared their hand. Having sold Lassana Diarra and Jermaine Defoe for a combined total of more than £35m the South coast club definitely have some brass in their pockets. Adams said:

‘I’ve asked Peter for five players. My squad needs that, so I can play different systems. I think Joey is a great man, but he plays for Newcastle.

I give people second chances. People in glass houses and all that. We’ve had 39 people through the Sporting Chance clinic who are sober and clean. I know that Joey has been there.

There’s a budget there and I’m working it to the best of my ability.’
