Newcastle could be in the race to sign Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson, now the player wants a transfer.

Glenn Roeder is not the first Newcastle manager to try and coax him to St James’ Park, and Roeder could succeed where Sir Bobby Robson and Graeme Souness failed.

Upson has told Birmingham that he will not sign a new deal.

Upson: ‘I have refused a contract and nothing has happened since then. I think it may be in City’s interest, if they want to get as much money as they can for me, to sell me the sooner the better.

‘It will be worth more doing it that way because of the length of time I have left on my contract.

‘I don’t know whether they are thinking like that. I don’t know if they want to keep me. I really haven’t a clue. Could things happen in January? It is something I can’t predict.

‘All I can do is make sure I am in the best possible condition I can be in. I haven’t got a clue. I made a calculated decision and I don’t regret it at all.’
