I know they are hardly kids but Newcastle’s Under 23 side are to us older heads.

With them struggling at the bottom end of the Premier League 2 second division and without a win so far in the Premier League Cup group format, it’s all eyes on the Checkatrade Trophy tonight.

The match against Oldham is interesting in that it gives the youngsters a chance of progressing towards playing at Wembley although a defeat ends it all before it’s really started.

On a bleak run of form, the U23’s have not won in the league since the middle of August with a 6-0 loss in their last game at Aston Villa to go with a recent 6-2 tonking at Southampton not long before.

It’s only a Checkatrade win at Crewe and a home win over Sparta Prague in the international cup that have seen a little light from the gloom that has stemmed since a decent start of two wins.

However if Newcastle win tonight then things could get slightly easier to progress as they will go into an unseeded last 32 draw.

So far they have played every game away as is the case when a club is seeded and they have been in a Northern Section but once it reaches the knockout stage then it means they can get home games against anyone as the stages come together.

Obviously they have to win first before anything else.
