Newcastle’s Under 23’s were looking to make it a double promotion last night after the first team gained entry to the premier league earlier this month.

Playing West Ham in the U23 premier league 2 play off final at St James’ Park, nearly 2000 fans witnessed the kids efforts just fall short as West Ham won 2-1.

We took the lead early on in the game after a corner saw Tom Heardman score from close range after being set up by Kyle Cameron.

Whilst we never really looked like conceding, we did at the end of the first half and then the beginning of the second half when Toni Martinez grabbed a brace.

Some huffing and puffing later and the bairns couldn’t add to the scoreline to see their promotion campaign stopped at the last.

It has been said that the U23’s will see a few players released and a new breed brought in and with the watching Rafa Benitez in the stands, he will want a stronger academy to help his project along. This was a slight blow to that.
