After Alan Shearer organised for every fan who attended his testimonial against Celtic to be given a free scarf, chairman Freddy Shepherd wanted to make a similar gesture to the Toon Army.

So, on Sunday, every Newcastle United supporter was presented with a free black-and-white scarf as they entered St James` Park.

A little late in the day, as it was planned for the start of the season. But the problems with the manufacturers were nothing to do with the chairman. And after all, I’m sure a scarf in winter is a lot more practical than one in summer.
