Match Talk Of The Tyne

They’re Not Coming Home

Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier both came off the bench last night during England’s impressive 3-0 win over our neighbours, Wales.

A lot had to go wrong for England to miss out on proceeding through to the knockout rounds of the World Cup, but England took no chances and absolutely dominated Wales from start to finish.

Southgate made a few changes for this game, whether it was for the sake or resting players or trying something new. What it did show, however, was that Rashford and Foden were sorely missed in the first two games, especially given that Rashford scored against Iran while Harry Kane is still to register a goal at this competition.

Kieran Trippier was rested and Kyle Walker took his place fresh from groin surgery. Walker had an okay game, but I expect Trippier to be reinstated for the next round. The Newcastle captain did get some minutes in this game, coming on for Luke Shaw and slotting into the left-back slot for 20 minutes.

Callum Wilson replaced Harry Kane who, from memory, never threatened the goal in the 55 minutes he was on the pitch, although he did set up Phil Foden’s goal from out on the right wing. Wilson, however, caused the Welsh defence no end of problems with his running. The Newcastle man was once again unselfish in his play looking to set up goals over going for glory himself. Maybe next time he’s on, he should be more selfish.

Gareth Southgate’s boys finished top of the group and have a date with Senegal as their reward. That match will be played on Sunday night at 7pm.
