Dean Saunders is looking to Newcastle to push their way up the premiership table as their big names players start to make their way back from injuries. The coaching staff are hoping the International break will have given players like Emre, Kieron Dyer and Solano to get closer to fitness.

Souness has confirmed that Solano, Dyer, Bramble and Babayaro will all miss the weekends fixture v Wigan.

Souness says the injuries are ‘killing us’. ?The whole thing is killing us. But we just have to get on with it. Titus is out with a hamstring injury – he has no chance – and neither has Babayaro because of a torn groin, so Robbie Elliott comes back into the frame. Dyer is still a couple of weeks away from a comeback. It’s been a disaster for him and a disaster for us all season. The good news is that Solano is to step up his training. His target is the derby with Sunderland a week on Sunday.?

Shola Ameobi, who has pleaded with Souness for a first team chance, is a worry for Saturday after picking up a calf injury in the reserves draw with Blackburn (2-2) on Monday. Although the player is hopeful of being fit. Ameobi has been linked to a move to Southampton, although it is unlikely that Newcastle would allow him to leave.

21 year old Michael Chopra is also asking for a first team chance amid rumours Newcastle are looking for another quality striker to partner Owen and replace Shearer when he retires at the end of the season.

One striker who reportedly won’t be coming to Newcastle is Anelka, as all links to January move have been dismissed by Fenerbahce vice president Nihat Ozdemir who said ‘Anelka is happy at Fenerbahce. Our fans love him and we want to be successful in the Uefa Cup, so it is not possible we would sell him to Newcastle.’

Steven Taylor scored a brace for England U21’s helping them on the way to a 4-1 win against Poland.

Owen says he isn’t losing any sleep as to whether he will succeed Beckham as England captain. In a Sky Sports News interview he said ‘Don’t get me wrong, captaining your country is an unbelievable feeling but I don’t lose sleep over who will be the next captain…The main thing for me is going out and concentrating on my game. You look around for other leaders to do their job; just because I’ve got the armband on doesn’t mean I change my style and just because John Terry doesn’t have the armband doesn’t mean he changes his style.’ John Terry got 71% of the votes in a Sun poll asking who should be captain.
