Loads of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after head coach Steve Bruce discussed the club’s January transfer plans.
The mid-season market is now just around the corner, and will see some clubs rush to add the extra quality to their side that could secure a title, book a place in Europe, push on for a strong cup run or fight to stay afloat in the Premier League.
For Newcastle, activity looks set to be at a minimum, as Bruce has confirmed that he will only seek deals for players that will offer a clear improvement on the 25 men he already has to call on at St. James’ Park.
“I haven’t even asked that question because I have two or three I haven’t seen,” Bruce told Les Ferdinand after the Sheffield United game on Thursday, while the club icon served as a pundit for Amazon Prime.
“Can we get players in January that can make us better? I have to be patient. If there is, I will bang down the door. I’m delighted with the squad we have.”
Where do we need to improve in January?
Goalkeeper
Defence
Midfield
Attack
The Toon are expected to have funds available to spend in January if the right player does become available, with Bruce keen to acquire a new central midfielder who can offer something different to the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean and Matty Longstaff.
Loan deals are also possible with the club yet to fill all of our temporary slots, with Jetro Willems currently the only player at St. James’ Park not on a permanent contract.
Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to Bruce’s transfer update…

I’m happy to admit Bruce has proved me wrong so far in terms of where I thought we would be at this stage of the season, but that is an alarming quote from a manager.

A striker with more than 1 goal, and not afraid to shoot would make us better

Well Steve we hardly want players who will make us worse 🤔

Don’t you need to plan for transfer windows in advance? Half of our team’s issues in transfer windows has been poor planning before they open #nufc

It’s December and you haven’t even thought about transfers yet. Meanwhile other clubs have plan A,B,C,D,E,F and G scouted and are ready to make bids when the window opens 🤦🏻♂️ let’s see what’s in the bargain bin at the end of the window and under bid for them or get some loans in

Bruce won’t get a penny to spend, as you give managers money for transfers, and since even #SkySports use his correct title #NUFC “Head Coach”. Means that as usual our superb scouting team will go and pay stupid money for unproven wingers and relabel them as a striker.
