Once again we welcome Kes the peregrine falcon to St James, as Barnsley visit in the second round of the Carling Cup. Having had a seriously physical encounter with the Category Ones on Sunday afternoon, Big Sam will have to take a good look at his resources ahead of the tie.
We`ve met Barnsley a few times in cup competitions, with pretty good success over recent years. 2002 saw us pip them 1-0 down at Oakwell, Craig Bellamy scoring, whilst in 1998 we beat them 3-1 in the FA Cup on the way to Wembley. Overall we`ve won the last four at home, notably with a 6-0 coming in 1992/93 as former Mag and present mackem Andy Cole grabbed a hat trick.
Newcastle Team News:
Team-wise, Big Sam has been quite vociferous about Jose Enrique being blooded in this match. The left back has yet to be included as Sam`s off-field team worked on giving him some bulk and working on his fitness.
Along with Jose it looks like a top two of EMO and Shola, with other players included such as Cacapa (“He`s not from Ayia Napa” – © Hebburnese Maniac) and maybe even Nobby for a farewell appearance. Expect a Troisi-type youngster to be blooded as well.
Player to watch: EMO
Little Mickey will be anxious to get off the mark for the season and put some pressure on Oba up front for the Wigan game on Saturday.
Barnsley Team News:
For t`Tykes on-loan midfielder Anderson de Silva won’t feature after Everton vetoed letting him play in cups. Also missing will be club captain Paul Reid, who is serving a suspension following a recent red card. I think we may have even been linked to him when Mick Wadsworthless was in situ as Bobby`s number two (literally).
Player to watch: Brian Howard
Four goals already this season definitely marks Howard out as the one to watch.
Barnsley’s last lineup
Barnsley: Muller, Nyatanga, Foster, Souza, Kozluk, Johnson, Howard, De Silva, Werling (Ricketts 71), Odejayi (Christensen 57), Ferenczi.
Subs Not Used: Colgan, McCann, Mostto.
Booked: Ferenczi, Howard.
Goals: Ferenczi 12, Werling 45, Howard 60.
2-0 Newcastle. Owen and Shola.
Wigan on Saturday at home.
