Talks opened: Newcastle must ensure that agreement with talented mainstay is found – opinion

|

Newcastle have got some incredible players, but Martin Dubravka has shown himself to be one of the most talented men within our squad. As a result, it’s no surprise that, according to his agent, via the Chronicle, that a new contract is being discussed.

As per the Chronicle, Dubravka’s agent said: “We are gradually starting to negotiate an improved contract”.

At present, a deal is far from done, and other interest may be concerning the Magpies, but it’s vitally important that the goalkeeper is tied down long-term at St. James’ Park.

After all, he’s proven to be a pretty brilliant player this term. There are no obvious weaknesses to his game, with strong shot-stopping, decent aerial ability and good enough quality with the ball at his feet helping him to cement his place as Newcastle’s first choice goalkeeper.

His stats speak for themselves (as per the official Premier League website); 108 saves, 1 penalty saved, 44 high claims, 21 clearances. Not to mention, with 13 clean sheets, he’s helped add another layer of defence to our talented backline.

It’s not just his talent, though. What’s impressed us particularly over the last few months has been his resilience. He had a bit of a wobble against Tottenham, in particular, and it would have been easy for people to turn on him. However, he responded well and bounced back; and that’s the sort of character you want from your goalkeeper.

He might be 30-years-old, but Dubravka only now seems to be finding his best form, and so you’d think that he’s got a while yet at the highest level. If that time is spent at Newcastle, then that’s fantastic news for us.
