Takeover Talk

Today saw Newcastle United PLC’s annual general meeting, and there can be no doubt what was top of the agenda.

Rumours of the club being taken over have circulated since the summer and, indeed, seem to have some basis in fact. However the deal seems far from done and it remains to be seen if Fat Fred is willing to sell up or not.

And with two faceless investment companies seemingly interested in the club, fans must be wondering if the getting rid of the man who has so long been a hate figure on the terraces will lead to even bigger problems down the line.

Now, say what you like about Fat Fred (and indeed most people do) but his passion for NUFC is beyond doubt. Can we really expect Polygon or Belgravia to show the same kind of attitude towards the club?

And whilst the takeover would no doubt bring the massive cash injection needed to strengthen the squad, whichever of the companies takes over, they will be looking to make a profit. Newcastle wouldn’t be a rich man’s play thing like Chelsea but just another finger in another pie.

Nor would Newcastle be given a bottomless transfer kitty, and in the long run may even be forced to sell big name players to make the books balance. And let`s not forget, for that £230 million, whoever buys the club will be getting a nice, big piece of real estate in the heart of the city centre.

It remains to be seen but it may well be a case of better the Fat Fred you know.
