Steven Gerrard has been linked with the current manager’s vacancy at St James’Park according to a report in The Guardian. However, former Rangers and Sunderland striker Ally McCoist has insisted the Glasgow-based club is bigger than Newcastle.
McCoist made the claim while on talkSPORT and suggested the former Liverpool midfielder would be better off staying at Ibrox and if he remained in Scotland for now, a better opportunity will arise in the Premier League in the future. He also stated that although Rangers are bigger, The Magpies do play in a better league.
Gerrard took up his role as Rangers manager last summer and has won 32 of the 60 games he’s taken charge of as he guided them to second in the league. The former England captain could get some inside information of Newcastle from his former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
McCoist, who scored over 250 goals for the Glasgow club said: “I wish Newcastle all the very best in their search for a new manager, but leave ours!”.
The Newcastle fans took to social media with many of them disagreeing with McCoist and although many of them are angry with the club’s decisions this week, they were not in a mood to accept being called smaller than Rangers.

how can a club founded in 2012 be bigger than us?

It’s a silly argument .U can’t deny rangers fan base and history however the league is awful and this will always hamper them. Stronger league and it would be comparable but at moment it’s silly . He forgets that the rangers captain is someone deemed not good enough for @NUFC

Arguably they could be and have had much more success over the years – but they have though won those trophies in what really is a minor league. No comparison with the Premiership or even the Championship.

Debatable but the league they play in is no better than the conference.
