‘Stuff of legend’, ‘Amazing’ – These Newcastle fans react to Toon product’s highlight reel

A selection of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting on social media to a highlight reel of Alan Shearer’s greatest goals in Black and White.

The Newcastle upon Tyne-born striker struck some magnificent goals for the Magpies following his return to the North East in 1996, having departed the club’s academy for Southampton eight years prior, before clinching the Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers.

He only played 25 games for the Saints and 147 for Rovers, though, before penning 181 goals in 369 games for United across all competitions, and clinched the still-unbeaten record for most goals in the Premier League with the Magpies as he stretched his tally to 260 – 52 more than second-placed Wayne Rooney.

Newcastle fans on Reddit have been reacting to a compilation of some of his best in Black and White, after Sky Sports created a highlight reel of Shearer finding the back of the net.

From his thunderous free-kick against Arsenal in May 2000, as he lashed the ball into the top corner, to his lethal hit from range against Manchester United in November 2002, there are some beauties in the compilation; which includes some of his pre-Newcastle efforts, like his eye-catching shot on the turn for Blackburn Rovers at home to Tottenham Hotspur in 1995.

Shearer made it look easy being able to lash the ball into the back of the net with almost unrivalled power and accuracy before hanging up his boots in 2006, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned 18-years and featured 30 goals in 63 games for England.

Here’s how these fans reacted to his highlight reel…
