Sticks And Stones May Break Your Bones But A Few Words Can Prove To Be Very Expensive

|

Sometimes, those who run this wonderful game of ours never cease to amaze me.

Take the case of yesterday (25th September).

It was announced, by the media, that Rafael Benitez had been charged by the Football Association.

It seems that a few innocuous remarks have landed our gaffer in hot water with the authorities.

When, at his pre-match interview, he was asked about Wilfried Zaha’s request for more protection from referee’s, Rafael remarked about the match official for the game, Andre Marriner:

“I have a lot of confidence with Andre Marriner. He has a lot of experience, even if his record with our players is not that great in terms of red cards.”

And that, it seems, is enough for Rafael to face a hefty fine, although he does have until 18:00, on September 28th, to contest the charge.

It seems that referees really are a protected species these days.

I know that the official line is that managers are not supposed to talk about referees but have Rafa’s words really deserved a lynching at the hands of the FA?
