According to the The News of the World and The Daily Mirror Wigan Athletic gaffer Steve Bruce is set to become Newcastle United’s fifth manager in two years, after it was revealed that Joe Kinnear may not be returning to St. James’ Park following a successful, yet worrying triple heart bypass surgery.

It has emerged that even though Kinnear may make a recovery in time for the final few weeks of the season, his doctors have advised him to stay away from the pitch to avoid future complications.

The 62-year-old had a pre-existing heart condition which he aggravated in 1999 when coaching former club Wimbledon, and is thought to have attended his last game at the United dug-out.

Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are said to be interested in recruiting Wigan’s Bruce, but may have to wait until the end of the season to sign the charismatic manager.

On a side-note, it appears Bryan Robson, or Terry Venables are not likely to join the Geordie-cause.

Bruce on the other hand has publicly stated that he wants to ‘one day’ join the Toon, and it appears the day has come after it was revealed that he considers Newcastle United a step-up from his present club Wigan – who, incidentally are above the Magpies in the Barclays English Premier League table.
