Safe standing has been approved for the Premier League and Championship, meaning that St James’ Park could see a standing area return in the near future.

Mike Ashley was opposed to bringing safe standing to St James’ Park, but our new owners have a different view and would be more likely to take into account the feelings of the fans on the matter before making any kind of decision.

Safe standing was trialed at several clubs last season including Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City and the results proved positive enough that the FA has now given the green light for clubs to introduce safe standing areas from the start of the 2022/23 season.

At the time of writing, Newcastle haven’t applied for a license but that’s not to say the application won’t be made in the near future. Given that any safe standing area still has to have seats available, opening a safe standing area won’t do anything to increase the capacity of St James’ Park, however, it could help turn the atmosphere up to 11.
