Graeme Souness says he will target proven Premiership players during the transfer window, proving once an for all that he HAS been given money to spend. Before Christmas Freddy Shepherd insisted the boss would have to sell before he could buy, but the ridiculous injury problems have pushed him into a corner.

Having already spent £50million on new signings in the last 12 months, Souness knows he will have some cash … but not a lot … and the sale of Lee Bowyer could help his situation.

Souness: ‘My feeling on that is, yes, he’s played at a high standard and he’s an international player, but I just think bringing a foreign centre-half in at this time with the way football is in our country – it’s so different – we need somebody who can make an instant impression.

‘With the way the game is on the Continent compared to our game, there would certainly be a period of adjustment, and I don’t think we have that luxury. I don’t think we can be giving anyone time. If someone comes in, it has to be someone who understands the English game and preferably has already played here.’
