Newcastle United have ruled out a move to hire Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Rafa Benitez’s successor, according to the Chronicle.

The 44-year-old Dutchman was one of the first to throw his hat into the ring to take up the St James’ Park hot seat when the club announced Benitez would not be signing a new contract, after leaving Feyenoord at the end of the recent campaign, having guided the Rotterdam side to the Eredivisie title in 2017.

However, Magpies executives informed representatives working for the former Netherlands international that the club are not interested in hiring a manager who does not have a proven Premier League record.

The Chronicle suspect United are instead focusing on trying to hire a manager who has experience of the English game and will be able to hit the ground running, rather than appointing someone who will be learning on the job.

Crystal Palace found out the hard way what it is like hiring someone without Premier League experience when they appointed Frank de Boer in 2017, only to part ways with the Dutchman after 77 days and five games in charge, giving the 49-year-old the unwanted record of holding the shortest tenure in the English top-flight in terms of games managed.

News of van Bronckhorst being turned down will be sure to delight some of the St James’ faithful, as the initial mention of his and Claudio Ranieri’s names being associated with the United top job sparked a lot of negative feedback.

Fans were quick to react to the reports of their interest in the Toon job claiming neither are fit to replace Benitez or even be his assistant, and that the United job would be an impossible task for any manager to take up.

One head coach that me be Tyneside bound is Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce, after it emerged on Tuesday that the Newcastle-born manager is in the running to take over at St James’ Park, while Roberto Martinez, Mikel Arteta and Ex-Watford gaffer Quique Sanchez Flores have also been linked.
