Freddy Shepherd is the man a section of Geordie fans blame for Newcastle’s second worst start to a Premiership season, and they voiced theit opinion loud and clear at the Riverside on Sunday.

The list of howlers the chairman has come out with in recent seasons has hardly gone down well with the fans, and they want a change at the top.

As well as the infamous ‘Toongate’ when he and ‘Dastardly’ Doug had uncomplimentary things to say about the fans in an undercover investigation by a Sunday newspaper, he has continued to make major decisions that have failed to bring success to the club.

Prior to appointing Edinburgh-born Graeme Souness as manager Shepherd said: ‘This club needs a Geordie manager … they always give 110% … and the next manager of Newcastle will BE a Geordie!’ Then came Souness! He was even further down the betting than Ant & Deck and Jimmy Nail.

The 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough was Newcastle’s sixth defeat of the season to make it the club’s first start to a season since Ruud Gullit was sacked.

During Sir Bobby’s reign, Shepherd and Doug Hall toured the world supposedly ‘looking for players on club business’. Holland, Spain, Brazil and Australia checking out Kleberson and Emerton. Only to say six months later that the club had no money to buy players! The Brazilian chairman who had Kleberson on his books called the pair of them ‘jokers’ and refused to talk to them.

Of the top PAID club directors in the entire league of 92 clubs – Newcastle have two in the top five! Doug and Fred.

Shepherd has come under fire many times in the past, but the feeling on Tyneside is that the man must go if Newcastle are to progress.

But will he sell his contolling interest in the club? He has refused in the past. But rumour has it Sir John Hall would gladly sell if the figure offered was £100m. The club is currently valued at just over £90m.
