Our record premier league appearance holder, Shay Given has expressed his concerns over the future dealings at Newcastle United.

In what is an important part of our future and ability of what we can actually do about it in the forthcoming transfer window, he pointed out the obvious.

Speaking in The Express he said:

I do feel that they need to strengthen in January, The other side of that is it`s not easy to get players in in January from other clubs as well, because they don`t want to sell their better players.

It`s not just a matter of if the new owners are in or not. It`s easy enough to say: ‘Oh, we`re getting all of these players in’, but the other clubs have to be willing to sell them.

It`s not black and white that that will happen. They definitely need to strengthen, just to give the lads a pick-up.

With takeover talk hogging most of the headlines here, how the next window is approached is paramount in my opinion in backing up Given’s theory.

If we continue the Mike Ashley trend of just spending what the club thinks is enough to survive then it will be a battle until the end of the season with an unpredictable and uncertain ending.

If however, there is any truth and desire in selling the club then Ashley will have to try harder to be on a level playing field with our rival clubs in that we pay the going rate on fee and wages.

What happens in January aside from any proper announcement will dictate the future direction of the club and Shay Given’s feelings will continue to be mirrored by fellow ex-NUFC pro’s and fans alike.
