According to reports in Spain, and that of British newspaper The News of the World, Newcastle United have enquired about former Ajax winger Tom De Mul. The 22-year-old Belgian has had a torrid time since moving to Spanish giants Sevilla, and Newcastle are prepared to give him a ticket out of his La Liga nightmare.

The right-sided midfielder has been the subject of a wide array of speculation, and Newcastle United have now emerged as the surprising front-runners to land him.

The fee is thought to be £3.5 million, and if reports are to be believed, the Belgian wingman could join the Magpies before next weekend’s clash against Blackburn Rovers.

The Magpies have already lost out to Rangers in the hunt for Danish winger Peter Løvenkrands, but are now focusing their attention on De Mul, who was regarded quite highly while at Ajax but has since dropped under the rader.
