Apparently Sam Allardyce has reacted angrily to speculation linking him as a replacement for under-fire Newcastle manager Graeme Souness. But then again …
the Bolton boss would not rule himself out of the running if Freddy Shepherd swung the axe.

Allardyce: ‘I do not like being linked to a club where another manager is in the job. It is unfair on me, it is unfair on this club and unfair on Graeme Souness. It just adds to the pressures.

‘You cannot stop speculation when there is a vacancy. But speculation before anything has happened is completely out of order.’

So, at last Bolton have broken the silence, but we don’t learn anything from it. But did we expect to? Obviously Sam isn’t going to say ‘giz a job’ when Souness is still on the books, but this was the chance for him to rule it out. And he didn’t.
