21-year-old midfielder Alan O’Brien and teenager Matty Pattison have picked up glowing praise playing for the United second string, and Newcastle are not ready to get them escape their grip.

Glenn Roeder: ‘Wolves and Leeds have come in for O’Brien and Pattison, but they are staying with us. We are looking for players, not looking to get rid of them, and the time is not right to let O’Brien and Pattison go, even if it meant they gained some experience of playing regular first team football.

‘Alan O’Brien is probably the quickest player I have ever worked with, especially from a standing start. He is like greased lightning and we need to keep him with us.’

And that could see the end of James Milner’s Newcastle career as Aston Villa again have asked if he is up for transfer.
