Glenn Roeder: ‘We are trying to eradicate errors in the transfer market by going in for players we have not researched enough on.

‘It is not just their ability as a player – I cannot possibly think about signing a player unless I know about his character.

‘If the character does not fit the ability, then he would not be for me.

‘A good example of that would be Damien Duff. His ability is matched by his character.

‘He is an absolutely fantastic person, I can see that already.

‘I have asked many people who have worked with Damien Duff and they have all given him a glowing reference.

‘We would have liked to have brought Damien down with us because it was a worthwhile occasion – players like Craig Fleming are the role models because it is rare nowadays for a player to stay for 10 years at a club.

‘It was, though, important he stayed at home because he only started [training] at Chelsea a week ago and I am not going to take any chances. He might play a part against PSV. We will see.’
