Right, What’s Next?

With the defence now overhauled with five new arrivals since January (pending completion of the Botman deal) we need to look at where else we need to improve in order to climb that Premier League table.

Pope, Trippier, Burn, Botman and Targett will completely transform the rearguard next season with plenty of back-ups still on the books as things stand. It’s safe to say that no more defensive players will be looked at this summer.

As far as midfield goes, the centre of midfield is pretty strong as is with the Brazilian duo, Bruno and Joelinton along with a revitalised Shelvey, a steadily improving Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff all capable of doing a job in the middle of the park.

It’s safe to say we could do with another winger given our current top options, Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are all prone to spotty form. Moussa Diaby is a firm favourite to bring in to add an exciting option, but progress on that front is slow. However, we have seen in this window that Newcastle aren’t about putting all their eggs in one basket, so if nothing comes of a move for Diaby, there will be several backup plans in place.

Now, much like the Botman deal, there’s an on-again off-again feel when it comes to our main striking target, Hugo Ekitike, with the current state of play indicating the deal is off. The Magpies have been linked with many other targets in this area with Armando Broja seemingly leaping into pole position. There’s also Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton, although that’s not lighting the fires of excitement amongst fans.

Who Do We Go For: Ekitike or Broja?

To think that 12 months ago we were complaining that we weren’t doing any business, and now some people are complaining that we’re being linked with everybody and they’re finding it boring (how can you??); I know which predicament I’d rather be in, and personally, i’m loving seeing the names linked with a move, even when you know instinctively whether it’s a realistic link or not.

This window is the most exciting one we have had for years, let’s just enjoy it and trust the manager and the owners.
