Revealed: 65% of Newcastle Fans Polled Against £16.5m Swoop For South American

|

The club’s two main striker targets this summer are reportedly Nice’s Alassane Plea and West Brom’s Salomon Rondon. With numerous Premier League clubs pursuing the Frenchman, Shields Gazette‘s Ross Gregory reported that the Baggies striker is now the “no.1 summer target.”

The South American forward does have a £16.5m release clause, which the Chronicle believe we have been weighing up triggering the whole summer, but his lack of goals since moving to English football three years ago is a major concern.

I decided to put it to a poll to gauge the view of supporters. A sizeable majority are opposed to us making a bid for the Venezuelan international:

I understand the opposition to Rondon’s signing. Would he be an improvement on what we have already in the squad? If we include Mitrovic in that conversation, then I would say ‘no.’ They are both target men with similar attributes. It could be argued that the West Brom forward has played more Premier League football, with 28 goals in 128 appearances.

Comparing that to Mitro’s record in the top flight (10 goals in 40 games), the Serbian’s strike rate is slightly superior, all be it with a smaller sample size. What do you think? Would Rafa be better off keeping the 23-year-old rather than going after Rondon? Let me know in the comments.
