Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan believes that Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce deserves a chance to be able to prove himself at St James’ Park.

The English tactician has been on Tyneside since last summer after taking over from Rafael Benitez, who departed to join Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang after he was unable to agree to new contract terms with us.

The Daily Star (19,04, back page) revealed that the Spaniard is “on the verge” of making a sensational return to us after just one season away in Asia, with Bruce expected to step aside for his comeback.

This is said to be part of the club’s new owners’ plan, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), who want to bring in a big name to get the ball rolling on their new project as they look to secure a £300m takeover of the Magpies from retail tycoon Mike Ashley.

Not everyone agrees with this as Whelan told Football Insider that Bruce deserves the opportunity to step up to the plate and make a name for himself in a positive light.

Will Steve Bruce be Newcastle manager next season?

“Steve Bruce deserves a crack. He has done very well since taking over”, he said.

“At the very minimum finish the season. He will keep them in the Premier League and that will allow him to get another move because he has done a great job at Newcastle.

“As long as they are honest with Steve. If in the end, if it is not Steve he will shake their hand, walk away and get another job. But it has got to be done the right way.

He elaborated by saying that Bruce deserves respect for the job that he has done so far and that the club should give it to him.

As a person who wants the club to do well, I would love nothing more than to see Benitez back in the manager’s dugout. At the same time, I can appreciate where Whelan is coming from, and he is right.

Bruce has been unfairly criticised from the moment he walked through the door and deserves the chance to see what he can do with a more substantial transfer budget under his belt.
