Newcastle United look set to miss out on Flamengo manager Jorge Jesus, according to reports.

It was revealed by Goal last month that the Magpies were monitoring the tactician and that he was our second option to former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino, as per Sky Sports.

According to Yahoo journalist Jorge Nicola, Jesus has been negotiating terms for a contract extension with his club Flamengo in his homeland and is close to securing just that, although he will not receive a huge pay increase due to the global economic crisis.

The report adds that an offer has been tabled that will see him earn €3.5m (£3.1m) per year and that interest has “cooled down” from Newcastle United, as well as Portuguese giants Benfica and FC Porto.

Would Jorge Jesus be a hit in the Premier League?

Yes

Yes

No

Jesus has done a tremendous job at Flamengo, recently guiding him to an unforgettable Cope Libertadores victory after coming from behind to beat the Argentinian side River Plate in the closing moments of the game. His side went on to play in the Club World Cup in Doha, only to lose to Liverpool in the final.

This could have something to do with the fact that our takeover has not been officially confirmed, despite reports from Football Insider suggesting that the £300m deal has edged ever closer to being given the green light by the Premier League. Factored in with the fact that football has been suspended until further notice, board members have more pressing issues for the time being.

As far as Jesus himself is concerned, his contract with the Rio de Janeiro side expires in the summer and must make a decision quickly regarding his future. Whatever happens, it is exceedingly unfair on current boss Steve Bruce.

Despite being heavily scrutinised from the day that he walked through the doors at St James’ Park, the former Manchester United defender has done a good job to stable the ship considering the tools that he has had to work with.
