Report: Newcastle hopeful of sealing first January signing within hours

|

Newcastle are yet to sign a single player this month, but it appears as though that could be about to change, at least judging by a report from the Northern Echo.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are hopeful of sealing a loan deal for Jordan Lukaku, who currently plays for Lazio, within 24 hours.

Lukaku is the brother of Man Utd forward Romelu Lukaku, and he’s currently 25-years-old.

Primarily a left-back, the defender will offer some much-needed depth and quality in the heart of our defence, and given how many games are on the horizon for the Magpies, that’s important.

At this stage, the move is only a short-term loan deal, but you could argue that this is the best course of action for the club. It’ll give us time to determine whether he’s at the level that he needs to be, with a move of this kind offering relatively little risk for us.

Granted, it would be better at this stage if we were able to make a few permanent signings, but we’ve simply got to take what we can get. He’s arguably an upgrade on Paul Dummett, and if he can remain fit, he could play a crucial role for us for the rest of the season.

Does this indicate that the club could finally be willing to spend some money? Well, they’ve left it late, but let’s hope so. At the very least, we need another signing, and ideally, we’ll be able to bring in a few more.

However, we’ve been in this position before – the position of false hope – so let’s just wait and see until this is confirmed before we consider anything else.
