As we continue our quest to make a move for on-loan hero Salomon Rondon permanent, various names have been linked with a potential move to St James’ Park to fill our need for a striker. It had been previously suggested that Club Brugge striker Wesley was on our radar, but our task of signing the Brazilian could have taken a hit with the latest report.
According to Belgian publication Het Laatse Nieuws (via Chronicle Live), Brugge have turned down an offer near the £16m mark from Lazio for the centre-forward; which was the reported figure in weeks gone by.
Now, it is claimed the Belgian side are instead looking for a fee in the region of £26.5m, which may see ourselves priced out of a move for the highly-rated 22-year-old.
A move for the striker could however be revisited once the uncertainty of our potential takeover gets cleared and Rafa Benitez’s future is also decided.
Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, Wesley has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Brugge, with 14 goals in 35 games across all competitions, and has some of the raw physical attributes that could see him be a like-for-like replacement for Rondon.
Whether the latest update on his side’s stance over his future is just a smokescreen for his later departure remains to be seen, but at in excess of £20m, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see us look elsewhere for a new number nine.
