Newcastle might have a seven-point buffer on the relegation zone – a position they probably would have taken before the season – but the unrest amongst the fanbase is there for all to see.

However, amongst a team which is playing some dour football with not many heroes, there is one man which the city unites over – Martin Dubravka.

In fact, former United striker Micky Quinn has gone as far as saying that he thinks he is one of the best signings the club has made in the past 10 years within his column in the Chronicle.

In an uninspiring performance at Crystal Palace last weekend, Dubravka may have made an error of judgement for Patrick Van Aanholt’s free-kick, but the Slovakian has absolutely no explaining to do.

It probably speaks volumes about the performance that the player who made a mistake for the goal was probably the stand out performer for the whole team. Before the mistake, the ‘keeper made two absolutely outstanding saves to keep his team in it, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the club to take anything from the game.

Quinn wrote within his column: “Martin Dubravka? He’s one of the best signings they’ve had for probably the last 10 years. He was outstanding, kept us in it.

“If I was Steve Bruce I would have read the riot act (excusing Dubravka) because that performance against Palace just wasn’t good enough”

It’s hard to argue with Quinn when you consider that Dubravka cost just a measly £4.5m after a successful loan spell from Sparta Prague.

As previously mentioned, the club are looking pretty comfortable in terms of relegation as it stands – accumulating 31 points from 27 games – and they have Dubravka to thank for a few of them.

Relegation is, of course, still a threat despite the advantage they have on the clubs below, but in Dubravka they know they have a goalkeeper they can properly trust.

He’s already 31, but unless a bigger club comes and snaps him up, then there’s no reason why he can’t be between the sticks at St James’ Park for many years to come.
