Ex-Newcastle United coach Neil Redfearn has showered manager Steve Bruce with praise following the work he has done since his appointment last summer.

Formerly a Manchester United defender during his playing days, Bruce was brought in following the departure of Rafael Benitez in the summer, as the Spaniard went to manage Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang.

Redfearn took temporary charge of the Magpies’ first-team as we went out to the Far East to take part in the Asia Trophy before the season began. Before this, he had been the U23s head coach with us.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Redfearn spoke about how well Bruce is doing at the club and described what the club was like when he took Benitez’s reigns.

Will Steve Bruce be Newcastle manager next season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

“Steve Bruce was a great appointment for me”, he said. I’ve always been a fan of Bruce and the team he has around him, and they’ve done a good job there.

“Rightly or wrongly, and I don’t want to get into that, it was quite a volatile atmosphere there but it wasn’t particularly difficult for me. “We were just holding the fort and I think the supporters knew that. They’re a really passionate and massive fanbase.”

I dread to think what he was referring on the back of another disappointing move from our repulsive owner Mike Ashley, who we are hopefully seeing the back of soon.

Bruce has done the best job that he can to steady the ship. Indeed, he deserves credit for that. But on the other hand, some of the football we have played under him has been appalling at times.

Granted, we have got some fantastic results under him, like when we beat Manchester United before Christmas. So Redfearn is right, he certainly does deserve the plaudits for his efforts.
