Newcastle might be thankful Manchester United didn’t snap up Erling Haaland this January – as it could have opened the door for one heck of a coup.

Even before the Norwegian came through the door in Dortmund, Paco Alcacer’s future was somewhat up in the air. But now this move could be the catalyst in one of the shocks of the January window.

Having just 11 games in the Bundesliga at this stage – with only six starts – the Spaniard has found it difficult to hold down a place within Lucien Favre’s side, who regularly opts to play with Marco Reus leading the line. Now, he looks to be one step further down the pecking order for the German team, so it’s thought that the 26-year-old now wants out.

According to the Sun, Steve Bruce is now in talks with the club and hopes to beat Valencia for his signature. It is said that the forward is now looking for a move to attempt to make Spain’s national side for the upcoming Euro 2020 finals.

Alcacer is reportedly allowed to leave on a loan basis this window, and the prospect of Newcastle could be one which excites the Dortmund camp as not only will they ensure regular football, but they may well be up for making it permanent for £25m in the summer.

With three players already in the club on loan – Valentino Lazaro, Jetro Willems and Nabil Bentaleb – there still space for one more loanee within the squad – and what an addition he would be.

With just a single goal being scored by a Newcastle striker in the league this season, the prospect of such a finisher joining United is a mouthwatering one. Despite largely being an option from the bench for Dortmund over the past two campaigns, he has bagged 26 times in 47 games for the club and would undoubtedly add some goalscoring pedigree that the club simply doesn’t own at the moment.
