Newcastle United have identified Odsonne Edouard as one of their top targets, according to reports, but it seems Celtic are not going to roll over and let him leave.

According to the Daily Star, the club hopes that the Frenchman will be able to solve their goalscoring problems, and they could target him in the summer as a result.

Nevertheless, despite the report saying that the club would struggle to reject anything over £30m, the Sun are reporting that they are trying to work out a one-year extension for next season, to try and fight off the interest from the Magpies and Arsenal for just one more season.

Currently, the attacker has just two years remaining on his deal, so in a hope to maintain his value for another season, they are crossing their fingers that he will agree to an extension.

Would you pay £30m for Edouard?

Lennon admits this to the outlet, going onto explain that coronavirus has changed the landscape from about a month ago, before saying “ideally we’d like to tie him down to another year on top of what he has already and keep him here”.

While obviously this might be seen as bad news for Newcastle fans as Celtic are doing everything they can to block a potential deal, it is showing that they are in a pretty desperate situation.

The way in which Lennon admits to things being different now compared to a month ago in the transfer market could possibly imply that the player is more open to a move to England, but that is still just speculation.

With Newcastle wanting a player who could cost around £30m, you have to assume that they would be replacing Joelinton in the starting line up. The Brazillian £40m-man has added just one goal to his account for the whole Premier League season – and that’s clearly not good enough from 29 games.

In fact, no side has scored less goals than the Magpies in the league with 25, so the club might have to bite their pride and find a new solution for the striker role, and either look to ship Joelinton on, move his position, or let him battle for the first-team role with a new striker.
