Report: 20 Newcastle players to have futures decided amid mass contract showdowns

|

Steve Bruce could be in-line to oversee a massive squad overhaul at Newcastle with key contract decisions set to be made on 20 players.

According to The Mirror, the Magpies boss might see a renaissance of sorts at the northeast club if he is able to keep them in the Premier League this season with a significant amount of names at the club entering their finals years on their current contracts.

Seven players, including the likes of Ki Sung-yueng, Federico Fernandez and Andy Carroll all have their current deals expiring next year in the summer of 2020, whereas Isaac Hayden, Fabian Schar and Matt Ritchie could all leave the club a year later for free in 2021 as contract details from Transfermarkt show.

Indeed, Bruce and the Newcastle board have a seemingly hard task ahead of them in attempting to tie down star names to new long-term contracts, however, it also means making the mission of surviving in the Premier League this season that more important.

Relegation to the Championship this year could be disastrous for Newcastle, who will likely see the majority of their senior players with under two years remaining on their current deal leave the club, meaning Bruce will likely have to rebuild an entirely new side from scratch with potentially 20 players leaving.

However, Newcastle have surprised a few this season by winning a game before the international break as the Toon stunned Tottenham by beating the 2019 Champions League finalists 1-0 at their own pitch, with a 1-1 draw against Watford the following week rounding off the first slate of Premier League fixtures before the first break of the 2019/20 campaign.

With Liverpool coming up next for Newcastle and Bruce, they will both be hoping to repeat their heroics against Spurs if they want to make one more step forward to their goal this season of retaining Premier League status, which is now even more important with the potential threat of 20 players leaving this summer should the northeast club go down.
