Re-writing The Record Books

Alan Shearer scored his 199th Newcastle United goal at West Ham on Saturday, and Jackie Milburn’s all-time goalscoring record is set to be moved into second place in the record books. Shearer only needs one more goal to equal the record and I’m sure it will come sooner rather than later.

Shearer: ‘The partnership is going well, and if we can both stay fit then we will cause people problems. We both have great belief in our own ability, and our games suit each other.

‘We got off to a great start at West Ham. The delayed kick off wasn’t ideal but we came out of the traps quickly thanks to Michael’s goal. With him in the team you know you always have a chance of getting goals, and he showed that today.

‘We said before the game we needed to win, to keep it going after Arsenal. We’ve taken seven points from the last three games, so things are looking good for us. I’m one goal away now [from the record], so hopefully I won’t have to wait too much longer for it.

‘The main thing about today was the three points. We said we needed to build on the win over Arsenal last weekend, and we did just that. We never make it easy for ourselves do we? At 3-1 we should have been cruising, but we gave them a chance to get back in it with the penalty.

‘We showed great resilience and great battling qualities like we did against Arsenal, and we got the goal right at the death just to make sure. We had a little sticky patch, but we’ve come through it with seven points from the last nine available, so we’re a lot happier than we were a couple of weeks ago.’
