Rafael Benitez has issued a revealing verdict on Newcastle issues, Ashley is partly to blame

|

Rafael Benitez’s issues at Newcastle are well known to most, with the Spaniard clearly frustrated by the behind the scenes matters at St. James’ Park. However, the boss has often refused to be drawn into discussing the matter, with his focus typically only on games and doing the best he can with the resources at his disposal.

However, in an interview with AS, the Spaniard has revealed why he thinks Newcastle haven’t been able to improve as expected – and he’s placed the blame on Mike Ashley’s door.

As per AS, he said: “After winning the Championship and getting promoted, the level of investment [in the squad] wasn’t what I had hoped it would be and that’s why we haven’t been able to close the gap on those teams above us.”

He also refused to be drawn into talk on his future, noting: “I don’t want the fans or the players to waste any time thinking about that [his contract]. The main thing is to make sure we stay up and then we’ll talk about projects.”

Clearly, nothing that Benitez has said here is good for the Magpies. He clearly views the lack of investment in his team as the main reason behind his team’s struggles – and it’s hard to disagree.

Most teams, when they’re promoted, require huge spending as they look to match up with the teams around them, but Newcastle weren’t quite so lucky. They’ve had to survive based mostly on passion, determination and managerial prowess. Clearly, Benitez expected more from the Newcastle brass.

Resultantly, it’s no real surprise that he’s not ready to talk about his future. Why would he when he’s got no idea about what Newcastle’s long-term prospects are?

If nothing else, Benitez’s latest comments offer a revealing insight into the mind of our boss.
