Former Hull City defender Alex Bruce has questioned Matty and Sean Longstaff’s futures at Newcastle United after the pair reportedly begun changing representatives.

It has been alleged that the brothers are working on leaving Beswicks Sports Ltd. in the hopes of gaining clarity over their futures, with Matty out of contract in the summer and there being no urgency from the club to hold fresh talks with Sean.

Interest in Matty’s situation is developing by the week, with clubs from around Europe said to be either considering summer moves for the midfielder who will be available for a compensatory sum of just £350,000, or have already made contact.

Bruce is in absolutely no doubt that his father, Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce, wants the academy graduates to be at St. James’ Park next season, though is not certain if the midfielders wish to be on Tyneside for much longer.

“It’s important, no doubt about it, Dad will want them to stay,” Bruce told Football Insider. “Geordie lads, the supporters will want them to stay, but I think there’s always a ceiling in everything.

Who assisted Isaac Hayden's winner vs Chelsea on Jan 18?

“It depends what they’re asking for, depends what they’ve been offered at other clubs, a lot of things go on behind the scenes that people don’t really know about. But, if you’re asking me plain in black and white would he want them to stay? Of course he would.

“If they’re asking for stupid money or they might want to go abroad, they might want to leave, they might want something new – you never know until you speak to an individual themselves.

“Dad’ll be hoping he can tie them up, but there will be a lot of things going on behind the scenes.”

Will the Longstaff brothers be at St. James' Park in 2020/21?

Yes, both

Only Sean

Only Matty

Toon boss Bruce has called on Sean Longstaff to start 13 of our 29 Premier League fixtures thus far this season, while handing younger brother Matty his top-flight debut against Manchester United before a further five starts.

Bruce has opted to omit Matty from his matchday plans in three of our last five league games, while leaving the 20-year-old as an unused substitute in the two where he made the 18-man cut.

Sean earnt two of his starts over our last five league games, though Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey were the boss’ favoured central midfield options against Burnley and Southampton in our most recent fixtures.

In other Newcastle United news, Bruce has been met with backlash from supporters after revealing plans to sign a 29-cap international.
