Many Newcastle supporters have been casting their judgment over the Magpies’ season, having ended the campaign five-points outside the top ten.

Rafa Benitez’s second full Premier League term at the St James’ Park helm did return one more point than a year ago, though, despite United slipping three spots in the table.

Had we only matched last season’s record of 44 points, we would have slipped a further spot, too, and finished the campaign behind Bournemouth – a side who conceded 12 more goals than us.

We, on the other hand, brought the campaign to a close with a clean sheet at Craven Cottage, which ensured Benitez’s backline held the eighth-best defensive record in the top-flight – something only seven of the top nine could better.

Scoring goals was a different matter, however, as despite Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez both hitting double figures, we could only muster 42 goals in 38 games, which was the fifth-worst in the league – only the bottom four scored fewer.

What helped to hinder our output in front of the net was that our players only managed to put an average of 3.7 shots per game on target and attempted 6.2 dribbles, which was the 16th and 18th best in both respects.

We also held the second-worst percentage of possession and third-worst pass completion rate in the top-flight, with only the relegated Cardiff City enjoying less of the ball across their fraught campaign.

Now that the season is over, though, here’s how fans on Reddit have judged the Magpies’ efforts…
