No, not with each other… Ayoze Perez insists Newcastle are still very much in the race to win the Championship title ahead of Brighton – despite the loss at Sheffield Wednesday seeing the Magpies drop to second.

Without wishing to tempt face Newcastle, 10 points clear of third-placed Huddersfield, should be safe when it comes to an automatic promotion spot. But defeat at Hillsborough on Saturday evening now means Brighton are two points clear at the top.

Perez, whilst conceding areas of the performance at Sheffield Wednesday fell short, is looking for a positive reaction against Leeds on Good Friday, with Newcastle STILL aiming to win the title.

He told the Chronicle Live.

‘We have to think about the Leeds game [on Good Friday] and try to improve the little details that could have made the difference at Sheff Wed. We have to try to fix those things and get the three points because we need it. We’re close – we just have to go and get it. We are still thinking about the title as well.’

Ipswich and Cardiff, away, are faced after the Leeds game on with Preston and Barnsley both coming to St James’ Park – these, on paper anyway, are games where Newcastle should get some good points?

Perez finished by saying the aim is to win as many of them as possible to achieve the ultimate goal of an instant Premier League return.

‘We have five games left, we must keep going and pushing to win as much as we can. The message [to the fans] is still the same – we are close to our goal. Hopefully we can get promotion.’
