“Pathetic”, “Liability” – So many Newcastle fans lambast 26 y/o for “brainless” role in loss

|

Loads of Newcastle United fans have been lambasting DeAndre Yedlin on social media for the defender’s role in the Toon’s 2-0 loss at Aston Villa on Monday night.

Yedlin started the game for his sixth-straight appearance in Steve Bruce’s opening line-up, having returned to the fold following a groin strain as a late substitute in our devastating defeat to Leicester City in September.

Fans have now been suggesting that the 26-year-old played a key role in our three-league game unbeaten streak reaching its end in Birmingham, after he committed a “pointless foul” on Jack Grealish that gifted the Villans a chance to open the scoring.

The American right-back brought Grealish down on Villa’s left-wing on 32 minutes, and the resulting set-piece led to Conor Hourihane giving the hosts the lead when he whipped the ball around the wall and into the corner of the net.

Yedlin’s performance improved somewhat after half-time, but with no Newcastle player finding the net, the Villa Park meeting would end in defeat for Bruce’s men.

Before the break, Yedlin registered no successful tackles or dribbles, plus one interception, two clearances and completed eight of his 12 passes, per WhoScored data.

He managed to pen one successful tackle after the break plus two key passes, but could not couple it with either an interception, clearance or successful dribble.
