In what is proving to be an unpopular appointment amongst Newcastle United fans following the surprise sacking of Chris Hughton at the start of the week, Alan Pardew claims other managers told him NOT to take the St James` Park helm.

The former West Ham boss hasn`t managed in the top flight since May 2007, when his Charlton team were relegated from the Premier League, and was sacked in August by Southampton in League 1 after a poor start to their campaign.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley vowed to replace Hughton with more experience, however Pardew has just two seasons in the Premier League, with Charlton`s relegation coming after a season where West Ham finished mid-table.

Speaking at his first press conference since his appointment was confirmed, Pardew has called on his players, who many were said to be devastated at Hughton`s departure, not to resent his arrival and to concentrate on survival this year.
