Palermo may have made the best start to a season in their history, but once again they claim the results are more good luck than good management.

They put West Ham out of the UEFA Cup 4-0 on aggregate and lead Serie A, but coach Francesco Guidolin insists his team are not Scudetto contenders.

The Sicilian outfit won a 3-2 thriller against Fiorentina on Sunday to maintain the pressure on Internazionale, and don’t forget he said he hoped his team didn’t go far in the UEFA Cup because the competition is for ‘losers’.

Palermo have only lost twice this season – to Atalanta and Empoli- while winning seven times, including their 2-0 triumph at AC Milan.

Guidolin: ‘The UEFA Cup means nothing in Italy. You are either in the Champions League or forget it.

‘Let’s stop talking about the Scudetto. We will never win it, Palermo was not built for this aim. I am delighted with the way my team is playing. But right now, we are playing too well and this may not last.

‘We have to take it one game at a time and enjoy this great moment for us. Against Fiorentina we played an extraordinary game and we put on a great show for the fans.’

Serie A
Team P W D L F A Pts
1 Inter Milan 9 6 3 0 20 12 21
2 Palermo 9 7 0 2 21 15 21

Serie A is currently the joke of Europe. Due to bribes, back handers, and more fishy stories than a Grimsby docker, look at the list of clubs that have had points taken off them.

Siena deducted 1 point.
Lazio deducted 3 points.
AC Milan deducted 8 points.
Reggina deducted 15 points.
Fiorentina deducted 15 points.

The Italians are level with Newcastle at the top of their pool, having won their opening group game at Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month.
