Opinion: Player’s concerning comments surely should force the Newcastle board into action

|

Newcastle are set to be in the Premier League next season – but will Rafael Benitez be with them? He’s still yet to sign a new deal at St. James’ Park, and that’s a real worry for the Magpies.

He’s been the figurehead behind another season of progress at Newcastle, and so the prospect of losing him will leave fans worrying about regression next season.

Fan fear is one thing, but it appears as though it’s not just those that surround the pitch at St. James’ Park that are fearing the worst. Seemingly, that feeling extends to the playing squad too.

Jamaal Lascelles has recently been discussing Benitez’s future, and it’s clear that he’s pretty fearful.

As per the Telegraph, he said: “As players we want him here, but we are not in control of whatever is going on. But hopefully he gets tied down. It does worry us that he could leave. There aren’t many managers like him and Newcastle United should do everything they can to keep him.”

The Newcastle players are clearly concerned that Benitez may not stay, and that speaks volumes about the impact that the manager has been able to have at the club.

If the club weren’t serious about keeping the manager before, surely they’ve got to be now. A leading figure in the dressing room has come out to defend the manager, and so if he leaves, it’s clear that there will be some unrest at St. James’ Park.

Surely this is going to force the board into action?
