Opinion: Newcastle’s star man from Watford draw will be hard to displace

|

After signing Allan Saint-Maximin over the summer, it’s fair to say that for a lot of Newcastle fans, Christian Atsu was something of an afterthought. However, the Ghanaian winger has started the season very brightly, and after shining the brightest against Watford he’ll be hard to drop.

Whatever Steve Bruce has been doing with the winger in training is having a brilliant impact on his performances, and against Watford that was as clear as ever. Sky Sports gave the 27-year-old man of the match for his display, and backed it up by saying the following:

‘Christian Atsu was a menace down the left-wing, causing all sorts of trouble for the Watford defence. His clever movement created space for midfielders, while he was unlucky not to register an assist after a great ball to Almiron. A deserved of applause when subbed.’

It’s hard to disagree with that analysis of the midfield man too. Looking at his stats via WhoScored, the wide-man certainly impressed, completing three key passes, three dribbles and three crosses as he played a vital role in the Magpies’ attacking play down the left-hand side.

that display only added to his impressive showing off the bench last week against Tottenham. The winger came off the bench to replace the injured Saint-Maximin and went onto register an assist for the only goal of the game as the Geordies secured a huge away win in North London.

What we’ve seen from the winger is mightily impressive, had Miguel Almiron been able to convert at the back post against Watford then Atsu would have had two assists in two games, and after he failed to register a single assist last season in 32 games in all competitions, Transfermarkt, Atsu looks like he’s going to take some replacing this time around.
