Opinion: Newcastle simply can’t afford to let Benitez call their bluff

|

Newcastle need Rafael Benitez. And it’s quickly becoming clear that that sentiment doesn’t go both ways. As highlighted this week by the Northern Echo, Benitez is willing to walk away from Newcastle if he’s not given what he wants at St. James’ Park – and that puts the Magpies in a very tough position.

Thus far, it’s seemed as though it was only a matter of time before a compromise would be reached, but now, that’s far from a certainty.

Newcastle, clearly, have felt as though they’ve got time to play the waiting game in an effort to reduce Benitez’s demands, but perhaps the manager is now calling their bluff. If they’re not going to give him what he wants, you can bet that another club will.

That’s why, at this point, it’s time for Newcastle to simply give up with the negotiations. They aren’t working, and in the end, it’s the club that will get the raw deal. They’ve played the hard game, and Benitez isn’t having it.

If they don’t give him what he wants, it’s simple. He’ll go elsewhere, and the club will be out of luck. That can’t be allowed to happen.

Mike Ashley clearly doesn’t want to give in, but what other choice does he have? He needs to ensure that a top manager is at the helm, and Benitez is the best he’s going to get.

Newcastle are running dangerously close to disaster, and if they make the wrong next move, the Magpies will only be going in one direction – and it’s not up.
