Opinion: Newcastle face big September and Bruce needs to have his targets

|

Despite having Rafa Benitez at the helm last season, the Magpies got off to an awful start in the Premier League season, and it wasn’t until matchday 11 in the Premier League that the Spaniard delivered the club’s first win of the season.

During the beginning of last season, it was a real slog for the Geordies. The club ended their pre-season with draws against Hull City and Porto before losing to Braga and Augsburg and then found themselves stuck in the relegation zone from September 1st to October 27th, Wikipedia.

With the memories of that woeful start almost completely forgotten because of the club’s 13th place finish and comfortable survival, Steve Bruce will have to be very wary that his side doesn’t slip into the bottom three and spend much time there, which is why September is going to be a big month.

The Magpies first four games have brought four points after back-to-back losses against Arsenal and Norwich were followed by a shock win away at Tottenham and home draw against Watford. Now, though, September’s three Premier League games look huge for the Magpies.

Steve Bruce’s side return from the international break with a trip to Anfield before they then host Brighton and travel to Leicester City, and they cannot afford to lose all three of those clashes. Bruce must have a points target in mind and despite the tough fixtures getting a win in there will be crucial.

The home clash with Brighton looks the most winnable seeing as it’s in front of the St. James’ Park crowd, but so long as the club can rack up at least a couple of points and stay above the red line over the next month then Bruce will be doing a good job.
