Opinion: If Newcastle fans want a cup run Bruce can still deliver it

|

Newcastle fans have not had a memorable cup run in a very long time. The last time that the Magpies either made it past the 5th round of the League Cup or the 4th round of the FA Cup was in the 2005/06 season, although if they want a cup run then hope is not all lost.

Whilst the Carabao Cup last night provided the fans with little pleasure as they were knocked out of the competition in their first clash at home to Leicester on penalties. However, if the fans are desperate for a cup run then the FA Cup is still a viable option.

Bruce has got history in the FA Cup. Back in the 2014 edition of the tournament, Hull City managed to defy the odds and get to the final of the tournament against all odds with Steve Bruce in charge. Ultimately they lost in that Wembley final to Arsenal despite going 2-0 up, but Newcastle fans would surely take an FA Cup final is offered one.

Last season marked 20 years since Newcastle last featured in an FA Cup final, and if they can get some sort of traction going in the knockout competition then there’s no reason why they can’t make it past at least the fourth round to end the club’s awful recent run in the cup.

Ahead of the Leicester City clash, Steve Bruce claimed on the Newcastle website that he was up for the cup clash despite the injuries that he has to contend with in the squad and his makeshift side put in a solid performance despite going out on penalties at home.

Had Newcastle got past Leicester then they would have to face Luton Town away at Kenilworth Road, and that would have provided them with a good chance to get into the 5th round, as it happens, though, it’s now the FA Cup where the opportunity for silverware presents itself.
