Opinion: Damning statistic shows just how easy Newcastle man has it

|

Ayoze Perez is a brilliant player, make no mistake, and his latest comment on Twitter about his plan to break into Newcastle list of top 10 Premier League goalscorers is an admirable aim.

However, the fact that that’s even an achievable feat for the attacker is simply mind-boggling.

For context, Perez recently shared an image of Newcastle’s top 10 Premier League goalscorers, with Alan Shearer, of course, at the top. ‘Challenge accepted’, he Tweeted, revealing his plan to move past the likes of Craig Bellamy and Obafemi Martins by reaching the 29 goal mark.

Fair play to Perez for aiming to make history, but it’s damning that the tally to reach that level is so low. He’s only been with us since the 2014/15 season – yet he’s amongst the greatest Premier League goalscorers in our history already?

In fact, he’s only 19 goals away from second place. That’s an achievable goal if he’s able to keep his standards high for the next couple of years. What does that say about us as a club?

Well, it says that we haven’t done well enough in the Premier League era, it’s as simple as that. We used to be a team that was feared for our offensive flair, but now? That’s clearly not the case.

Again, you can’t blame Perez – but he shouldn’t even have the chance to get into the top 10. He should have to really fight for that. We desperately need to bring in a striker that can make us proud of our attack again. Salomon Rondon is good, but he is going to break into this list? It’s hard to see that happening.

How times have changed.
